Dunning-Kruger Effect
In 1999, David Dunning and Justin Kruger published a study that later became a psychological phenomenon called the Dunning-Kruger effect. The study which they called a "modest report" was "Unskilled and Unaware of It: How Difficulties in Recognizing One's Own Incompetence Lead to Inflated One's Self-Assessments." Dunning and Krugger were awarded with the Ig Nobel Prize a year later.
In short, they found that in many situations, those who can't... don't know they can't. It's when we lack competence that we're most likely to be brimming with overconfidence.
