Testing The Water

You went for a swim, not necessarily that eager, the water looked cold. You put one hand in to see how it felt, how cold it was to be precise, looking for confirmation of your prediction - hope. It's freezing cold! You bailed. You were testing the water.

Your kid and you were in a supermarket, and she was asking for a small ice cream cone knowing you are all against ice cream before meals. She knew too well she got nothing to lose. She was just testing your water, if you said yes go ahead, she might try to ask for a slightly bigger ice cream cone next time.

Your customer and you were negotiating a deal, and he proposed some additional discount above the standard generous offer that he had been enjoying for years. You may say no, but he also knew that he could only get more and never less. He was testing your water.

Every day, people will attempt to test your water. Keep your eyes wide open.
