This Week Recap

Here's my not-too-personal week recap.

Book: Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman

Book #17 of 2021 and not an easy one to read. Kahneman wrote this book from his many life-works with his late friend Amos who he mentioned a lot in the book. In this New York Times best-selling book, Kahneman and Amos argued that there two systems in our human cognitive thinking, System 1 which is fast, and System 2 which is slow. I just finished chapter 16 of Part 2.

Interesting things I learned this week

Jessie Petersona Canadian man who spends a great deal of his life living in Vietnam, has his own column on VNExpress with an interesting article this week.

I personally resonate with this and truly think it's about the person we decide to hang out with or to be friends with. I enjoy having deep conversations with only a handful of people, the rest are just over-the-top hot stuff cheap easy laughs kind of conversations. The latter leaves us feeling empty every time. And if I may, what Jessie wrote about does not only affect family members and their conversations but also the whole social life under attack.

I shared this article with some of my friends, who I think would understand.

Adam Grant released his Ted Talk on his new book Think Again: What frogs in hot water can teach us about thinking again

Why are humans so slow to react to looming crises, like a forewarned pandemic or a warming planet? It's because we're reluctant to rethink. From a near-disastrous hike on Panama's highest mountain to courageously joining his high school's diving team, Adam borrows examples from his own life to illustrate how tunnel vision around our goals, habits, and identities can find us stuck on a narrow path. Drawing on his research, he shares counterintuitive insights on how to broaden your focus and remain open to opportunities for rethinking.

Gosh, I can't wait to read his book.

Never Stop Learning

Duolingo

Baby, I'm back. It's not easy to keep up with the learning, of anything. Should I find myself a better motivation?

Speed Reading on Mindvalley by Jim Kwik

I took on this Super Reading quest from a recommendation by a friend. I know Jim way back, and I don't mean personally, so I took a leap of faith. I did not finish it but I learned my reading speed can be improved up to 25 to 50% just by using a simple trick. The reason I couldn't follow through was the way the course designed which is not the point here. I loved it.

That's it for now.

Love,
