Who To Make Us Happy?

Nobody. Period.

I spoke to my kid one or two years ago, he was about ten then, when I accidentally found out that he thought I, as his mom, was supposed to make him happy.

Of course, for a ten-year-old, the definition of happiness is still simple like eating an ice-cream or playing with a puppy. I took that occasion to deny my life-long responsibility of making him happy as his mother. I told him that the only one who could and should take care of his own happiness is himself. Nothing, no one can do that for him unless he could cultivate it from within.

More than often, we put on our shoulders the responsibility, the mightly mission of making others happy. That could be our spouse, our children, our parents, our siblings, even our boss. And we are miserable walking around every day with that heavy-duty hanging above our head.

Take that off. It's not your role.

Focus on yourself.

You can't pour from an empty cup.
